| This area of the coast near Cambria reminded Alan of Hawaii, with the ocean to one side of the road and the land sloping up to peaks on on the other. |

| Alan felt an urge to "touch" the Pacific Ocean, which seemed silly to him at the time, but after which felt almost spiritual. |

| We saw a lot of agriculture, from expansive fruit tree farms in Bakersfield to vineyards in Paso Robles. Then elephant seals, the Hearst Castle, twisting highway, and picturesque cliffs along the coast. |
